Materials Engineering Assistant

Responsible for the design, development, processing and testing of materials used to create medical device products and hydrogels.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
  • Review plans for new products and make recommendations for the selection of materials based on design objectives, such as process ability, strength, weight and cost
  • Conduct tests on raw materials and finished products to ensure they meet quality standards and specifications
  • Develop and set up new test methods
  • Write reports and analyze labor costs and ensure all projects remain within budget
  • Plan and conduct laboratory operations for the development of fabrication procedures and materials that meet specifications and standards
  • Analyze product issues and failure data to better understand the causes of problems and come up with better and more innovative solutions
  • Support R&D and Engineering with process & test development, prototyping, design verification, SPC process optimization & validation (IQ, OQ, PQ), and failure modes effect analysis (FMEA)
  • Coordinate R&D trials with production and set-up jobs for R&D trials and adjust inventory in Epicor
  • Create and improve processes and products
  • Prepare formulations
  • Maintain accurate files and documents (electronic and/or paper) and handle and protect confidential data
  • Assist with department projects as needed
Qualification requirements:
  • Must be able to perform each duty outlined above and possess the education, skills, and abilities described in this job description
Education and/or experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in materials engineering or a related engineering field or a combination of education and experience
Language skills:
  • Must be able to read, analyze, and interpret AMC policies, procedures, and regulations and must be able to write reports and effectively present information to company management as required
Reasoning ability:
  • Identify problems and review relevant information to evaluate options and develop solutions
  • Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or schedule form
Physical requirements:
  • Constant use of hands and arms
  • Good vision, depth perception, hearing, and speech
  • Must be able to lift up to 25+ pounds (4 ft high, 10 times per day)
Environmental conditions:
  • Majority of time is spent indoors with few to any changes in temperature, and this position works in close proximity to heavy and noisy machinery and requires use of chemicals with strong odors
Other skills/abilities:
  • Proficient in MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Strong knowledge of fundamental chemistry and polymeric materials
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills
  • Experience with plastic product design
